“Engage in genre analysis and multimodal composing to explore effective writing across disciplinary contexts and beyond”
For every genre, even those that did not receive focus as major projects, we did genre analyses to better understand the conventions of the given writing style, its varying implementations, and potential pitfalls. This process elucidated both the specific qualities of each genre and the continuities between them. With the memo, for example, I kept in mind the distinctions and similarities with the business letter form. The genre analyses we did on tech descriptions and instructions covered particularly diverse collections of these writing forms. With the proposal, we had to combine perhaps several different genres into one cohesive project, including a boilerplate, a job posting (we also worked on resumes), elements of the memo, and tech descriptions, and we employed both digital and oral media. We were also responsible for different elements of the proposal within our group, providing us with experience crafting a modular document and synthesizing different genres (figure 25).
